![]() She also began to work under prosecutor Klavier Gavin on multiple cases, whom she distantly had a dislike for, resulting in her nicknaming him as the "glimmarous fop".Īround a year later, she retook the forensics exam, and this time was able to pass, finally achieving her dream of becoming a forensic investigator. It was during this time that she came into contact with Phoenix's prodigee, Apollo Justice, becoming the regular detective on his cases. ![]() Due to this she was instead thrown into criminal affairs as a homicide detective, which had a major effect on her personality, turning her constantly grumpy and gloomy. Seven years later, Ema took the test to become a forensic scientist but ended up failing. During his break she became involved with a number of Miles Edgeworth's investigations. Following this, she left to study forensic sciences in Europe, before returning to America for summer break. In her first appearance she was a bubbly forensic obsessed high school student, who became Phoenix Wright's assistant during a case involving her sister. She is a science obsessed woman, who has aided the protagonists during various cases, often times aiding them with collecting things like fingerprints. Fittingly, as of SoJ Ema's go-to voice actress is no longer Satomi Hanamura (same as Maya's) but Marina Inoue - who's quite a big-name actress herself, and probably not very cheap! - so I think the franchise acknowledges this.Ema Skye ( Akane Houzuki in Japanese) is a character in the Ace Attorney series. So the end result is that it flips depending on which point of the timeline you mean, but I'm overall satisfied with the result because in the end, two characters who were originally too similar for my tastes ended up diverging quite a bit and becoming unique, which is what was important to me. That said, writing-wise I was actually fairly satisfied with her in SoJ because I would have been rather miffed if a woman pushing 30 was still acting like her self at 17, so even if it's more "boring" arguably I prefer her this way. Maya on the flipside, I adore her as a teenager (I honestly think she's my favorite out of the partner heroines still), but I don't think her adult self ranks on my favorite characters list - although that may change when the DLC case comes out here and we get to investigate with her. Incidentally, I really liked where they took her character in SoJ - they took her out of the really awful narrative buzzkill to her arc AJ put her in and brought back what I did like about her pre-AJ while also retaining the new characteristics that made her unique (gotta love the Snackoos in her stress moments). ![]() In AJ, although I disliked how her life got ruined mainly so they could have her be a detective (or at least that was how I saw it at the time) I do at least think it did quite a service to her character in that she gained her own distinct personality traits and the sort of moodiness and stubbornness you don't see with Maya, and I genuinely felt for her and her rather unfortunately relatable adult life problems. I understood the development justification that they needed to have her invoke Maya or else Nick wouldn't snap out of his stupor and try to help her, but I feel like they really didn't do enough at the time. Pre-AJ I didn't really have much of an opinion of Ema, mainly because she basically seemed like a Maya they pulled out with "science!" tacked on, and Investigations would basically yank her out whenever they needed someone to do forensic science (I'm aware both Investigations titles were made after AJ, but we're talking timeline here).
